Sculpture Workshop

Make a unique outdoor sculpture that can be used as a base for your mosaic work.

 

Over the course of this two day workshop, you will learn how to build an armature from wire and newspaper. You will learn how to apply a weatherproof cement mixture to your armature. This is a perfect base for you to apply a mosaic finish (in your own time or in Artopia’s regular mosaic classes). You will lao learn how to use Artopia's special Sculpt & Stick product to model and add features to your sculpture as well as lots of other sculpture and mosaic tips and tricks.

WORKING WITH MINERALS


Crystals, Gemstones, Rocks and Fossils


with Helen Harman

Under the Earth’s surface is a wealth of beautiful natural materials just waiting for us to incorporate into our mosaic art. There are shimmering crystals and precious gems that come in all colours of the spectrum. There are amazing patterned rocks in rich earthen tones. There are fossils which capture the imprint of plants and creatures from long ago. During this workshop, teacher, Helen Harman will show you how to enrich your art work using these beautiful non-traditional materials.

This Workshop Will Cover the Following:


· Selecting of non-traditional minerals for mosaics using identifying features such as colour, hardness, lustre and crystalline structure


· Unique Properties of crystals and their relevance to our art


· Cleaving techniques and tools


· Laying techniques


· Application: when, where and how these materials can be used


· Generating ideas for incorporating these materials into your art work


· Sourcing your gems, crystals and rocks


(Note: the use of traditional stone mosaic materials such as marble, granite and travertine will be discussed but not covered extensively within this workshop).

Assemblage Workshop

Assemblage Art and Contemporary Mosaics Workshop



In this workshop we are going to look at assemblage art and the crossover with contemporary mosaic art. We will be exploring the notion of assemblage as a springboard to using objects that surround us as well as traditional mosaic materials to create a contemporary work of art.
