Sculpture Workshop


To Be Announced

10.00 am – 4.00 pm

Make a unique outdoor sculpture that can be used as a base for your mosaic work.



Over the course of the day you will learn how to build an armature from wire and newspaper. You will learn how to make a weatherproof cement based mixture and apply it to the armature. This is a perfect base for you to apply a mosaic finish (in your own time or in Artopia’s regular mosaic classes).


Cost: $80 PLUS materials charge (between $20 and $45 depending on size of sculpture)


You may want to attend a follow up class to apply a second coat (Cost $25)

WORKING WITH MINERALS

 Crystals, Gemstones, Rocks and Fossils

with Helen Harman

Under the Earth’s surface is a wealth of beautiful natural materials just waiting for us to incorporate into our mosaic art.  There are shimmering crystals and precious gems that come in all colours of the spectrum. There are amazing patterned rocks in rich earthen tones. There are fossils which capture the imprint of plants and creatures from long ago.  During this workshop, teacher, Helen Harman will show you how to enrich your art work using these beautiful non-traditional materials.

 

This Workshop Will Cover the Following:

· Selecting of non-traditional minerals for mosaics using identifying features such as colour, hardness, lustre and crystalline structure

· Unique Properties of crystals and their relevance to our art

· Cleaving techniques and tools

· Laying techniques

· Application: when, where and how these materials can be used

· Generating ideas for incorporating these materials into your art work

· Sourcing your gems, crystals and rocks

(Note: the use of traditional stone mosaic materials such as marble, granite and travertine will be discussed but not covered extensively within this workshop).

Assemblage Workshop

Assemblage Art and Contemporary Mosaics Workshop

In this workshop we are going to look at assemblage art and the crossover with contemporary mosaic art. We will be exploring the notion of assemblage as a springboard to using objects that surround us as well as traditional mosaic materials to create a contemporary work of art.

Mosaic Clay Sectiles

Making Clay Mosaic Sectiles

  During this course you will learn to make unique clay pieces to incorporate into your mosaic work.  These one off  pieces in mosaic terminology are know as sectiles. 

You can make leaves, flowers, fish, hearts, shapes and many other beautiful little sectiles.

 

Cost: $60 plus $25 per tray of sectile pieces (includes, clay, firing and glazes). 

You will have enough time to make at least one tray.

You will also need to attend one regular class at Artopia to apply the final coat of glazing (cost: one stamp for regular students or $20).

Smalti Workshop

 

  Learn everything you need to know about the world’s most prestigious mosaic material.

Spend the day learning all about this beautiful mosaic material. We will cover the following:

Types of Smalti available

Suppliers and Prices

Uses and Applications

Cutting and Laying Techniques

 

You will gain hands-on experience by fabricating a small work of art using Smalti on fiberglass mesh.
